Shaolin

Caregory: Martial Arts
Subcategories: Chinese, Andy Lau, Jackie Chan, Remake, Epic Ass-kickery

Rotten Tomatoes: Liked by 80% of the critics

This movie was released last year in China, and a release date for the US was just announced: September 9th. Coming with it is a new trailer:

Red State

Category: Horror
Subcategories: Kevin Smith, Abduction, Religion, Just In Case The Westboro Baptist Church Wasn't Scary Enough

The new red band trailer for Kevin Smith's first stab at a horror film (pun fully intended) with political overtones. The critics aren't very fond of this movie (33% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes), but Quentin Tarantino apparently loves it (big shocker, I know).

And here is the original teaser trailer that has much more of the horror vibe:

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

Category: Horror
Subcategories: Comedy, Slasher Parody, That Guy from Firefly, Chipper Diving

Rotten Tomatoes: Liked by all 12 of the critics
Netflix: 4.2 stars

The New Red Band Trailer:

Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Category: Martial Arts
Subcategories: Chinese, Andy Lau, Sherlock-Holmesiness, General Awesometude

A new trailer for the movie that people are describing as "batshit crazy"

Wake Wood

Category: Horror
Subcategories: Zombie Children, That Rat Guy from Harry Potter

Rotten Tomatoes: Liked by 84% of critics, 37% of the masses (?)
Netflix: 3.5 stars

Conan The Barbarian

Category: Fantasy
Subcategories:  Swords & Sorcery, Ron Pearlman, Epic Asskickery

A Red-Band clip for the upcoming movie.

Intruders

Category: Horror
Subcategories: Clive Owen, Ghost? Boogieman? Demon?

The new trailer:

Dante 01

Category: Science Fiction
Subcategories: French, Space, Prison, Mad Scientists, No Budget for a Hairstylist

I think this movie gets a bad rap. I'm not saying it's great, but the statistics make it look like a SyFy product, and it is a lot better than that. It might be a matter of misled expectations. If you love science fiction, then it isn't a bad way to spend a couple of hours.

Rotten Tomatoes: Liked by 33% of the critics, 21% of the masses
Netflix: 2.5 stars
My Opinion: 5 out of 10

The Twilight Samurai

Category: Martial Arts
Subcategories: Japanese, Samurai, Yoji Yamada

Not a fast paced martial arts movie, but amazing. Even people that aren't fans of the martial arts genre will appreciate this movie.

Rotten Tomatoes: Liked by 99% of the critics, 93% of the masses
Netflix: 3.9 stars
My Opinion: 9/10

In Time

Category: Science Fiction
Subcategories: Justin Timberlake, Life Extension, Time, That Guy from The Big Bang Theory

Just out from ComiCon

Lunopolis

Category: Science Fiction
Subcategories: Independent, Moon, Giant Emeralds Of Power

This is apparently showing in festivals right now with no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but it is getting a lot of good press from the festival people. It isn't clear to me if this is a 'found footage' film or a fake documentary.

Paranormal Activity 3

Category: Horror
Subcategories: Ghosts, Found Footage, Prequels

The first trailer for the upcoming flick:

Acolytes

Category: Horror
Subcategories: Australian, Slasher, Serial Killers, Damn Kids Snooping Around...

One could argue that this is more of a thriller than a horror film, but if we're arguing about it, then it's close enough.

Rotten Tomatoes: Liked by 75% of the critics, 40% of the masses
Netflix: 2.6 stars

The Amazing Spider-Man

Rotten Tomatoes: No critic's reviews, liked by 43% of the masses
Netflix: 3.1 stars

Category: Superhero
Subcategories: Batman, Bane, Commissioner Gordon, Awesomeness

The just released teaser trailer:

Contagion

Category: Science... Fiction?
Subcategories: Viral Spread, Bird Flu, Apocalypse, A Viral Zombie Movie without the Zombies

It's good to see a film that doesn't appear to use the old plot device that The Plague is Caused by Evil or Inept Scientists Meddling in Things They Shouldn't.

Exit Humanity

Category: Horror
Subcategories: Zombies, Civil War, Yet Another Reason to Avoid the Backwoods of Tennessee

Coming Soon...

Fun fact: One of the actors here is Stephen McHattie, who was also in "Pontypool", and is also in an upcoming zombie flick "A Little Bit Zombie". If you count a made-for-TV movie about Jesus that he did in the late 70's, He's been in four different, unrelated zombie movies. He also played an immortal in the "Highlander" TV series, which is sort of a zombie, so I put his total at 4.5.

According to IMDB this is out, but there are no entries for it in Rotten Tomatoes or listing in Netflix.

Supposedly Cuba's first horror film, this is generating a lot of buzz. It is supposed to be making the festival rounds this summer.

Code 46

Category: Science Fiction
Subcategories: Genetic Engineering, Big Brother, Tim Robbins, Oedipus Complex?!?!

It seems this is a real hit or miss movie. I really liked it, but you have to be in the mood for intellectual science fiction. Some have cast this as a romantic movie, but I don't think it is - I think the relationship serves as a plot device to explore duty and consequence. Maybe I'm just grading it on a curve because I had set the bar pretty low when I stumbled across this surfing the free movies available on my OnDemand...

Category: Martial Arts
Subcategories: Chinese, Donnie Yen, Asian Mythology, Crazy Weaponry

Rotten Tomatoes: Liked by only 27% of critics, but 59% of the masses

My Opinion: 6/10 - it would have been higher, but they crossed the line from 'stylized' to 'corny' a couple of times.

The Three Musketeers

Category: Martial Arts
Subcategories: Urban Fantasy, Steampunk, Milla Jovovich in a Corset Kicking Ass

The trailer for the upcoming... I want to say remake, but I don't think this is based on the earlier Musketeer movies.

I Sell the Dead

Category: Horror

This is a fun movie,  but it felt like the pacing was a little too slow.

The DVD is supposed to be released in the US in August (From ShockTillYouDrop.com). The trailer looks awesome, and this movie was supposedly a big hit in Asia, but there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Netflix doesn't have a listing yet.

Chocolate

Category: Martial Arts
Subcategories: Thai, Autistic, Chicks that Kick Ass, The Power of M&Ms

It's hard to believe that a movie with "...A special needs girl / With a special need / To kick some ass" in the trailer would garner such critical praise...

Primer

Category: Science Fiction
Subcategories: Independent, Time travel, Why Engineers Should Never Be Allowed To Get Bored

This is a really cerebral movie with a plot convoluted enough that there are YouTube videos of people trying to explain it with diagrams. So don't watch this when you just want to escape reality for a little while - you will be disappointed. If you're in the mood for a puzzle, though, check this out. Also, they made this with an odd tendency for the characters to talk over each other. I think this ties into the plot symbolically, but it's hard to get used to and the plot is already convoluted enough, so the second time I watched it I turned the subtitles on, and it helped a bit.

All My Friends Are Funeral Singers

Category: Supernatural
Subcategories: Independent, Psychic, Ghosts, Letting go of your invisible friends

I'm labeling this one supernatural rather than horror, because it doesn't seem to be trying to be scary despite the fact that ghosts are a main plot point. This one appears to be a 'love it or hate it' film...

Category: Martial Arts
Subcategories: Chinese, Andy Lau, Sherlock-Holmesiness, General Awesometude

Shark Night 3D

Category: Horror
Subcategories: College Kids, Bikinis, Evil Sharks, Evil Shark Wranglers

This movie has been referred to as "Jaws" in a lake, but the trailer hints that there is evil plotting behind this, which pushes this over into the horror genre, in my opinion.

Another Earth

Category: SciFi
Subcategories: Romance?, Coldplay?, The Bastard Offspring of the Unholy Union between a SciFi movie and a ChicFlick

This is another movie that is flirting with the edges of SciFi. Maybe it's just the Coldplay in the trailer that's throwing me off. And the fact that we supposedly have another planet sitting on our doorstep in a stable orbit around the sun without tidal disasters, planetary upheaval and neither one getting beaned by the other's moon. I'll try to keep an open mind, I promise.

Død snø (Dead Snow)

Category: Horror, Comedy

I don't like this movie because it challenges my long standing zombie apocalypse plan of moving someplace cold, based on the assumption that  the zombies would freeze. That said, this looks like a fun ride.

I'm not convinced this is a SciFi movie yet, but since is has Snoop Dog as a porn director, I'll include it. Of course, if they wanted to make a bold choice, they would have cast Snoop as the particle physicist. This isn't getting great reviews, but if you're interested the DVD is being released next week.

Looks like a trippy ride...
Rotten Tomatoes: 67% fresh
Netflix: 2.7 stars

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

The Lost Bladesman

An upcoming release starring Donnie Yen

Resurrection (Opstandelsen)

Here is a Danish Zombie film that came out last year. No word yet on when it will be available in the US - neither Rotten Tomatoes or Netflix have a listing for it - but a 6.8/10 score on IMDB indicate that this one could be good.

Immortals

While there are other movies by this title (one of which I'll be posting in the upcoming week or so), this is a new offering in the new ancient Greek epic trend.

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon

They just released a new trailer

Ink

This is an amazing movie. Just from the trailer, you can tell that it is one phenomenal, dark shot after another. The story is very unique, and quite powerful.
Rotten Tomatoes: 100% fresh (yes - you read that right), liked by 78% of the masses
Netflix: 3.4 stars
My Opinion: 9 out of 10

Green Lantern

Coming in June...

The Warriors Way

Guaranteed to be the best Ninja-Cowboy movie you've ever seen. It isn't getting very good press, and I haven't seen it yet, but I think the key to enjoying this movie might be managing your expectations before you watch it. It's a movie about cowboys fighting ninjas, after all.
Rotten Tomatoes: 32% Fresh

Inhabited Island

This looks like a pretty cool Russian SciFi movie. Rotten Tomatoes doesn't have a rating for it right now, and Netflix has 3.3 stars but only 22 ratings, so I don't think that means much, since I've noticed that some of the people on there will vote on a movie without having seen it. The DVD is available on Amazon, but it isn't clear when Netflix is getting it.

X-men: First Class Trailer 5

The Bleeding House

A spooky upcoming independent horror film

The Clone Returns Home

I haven't seen this one yet, but it appears to be a pretty cerebral offering from Japan.

Camp Hell

Also known as "Camp Hope", this is a upcoming horror flick starring Jesse Eisenberg from "Zombieland"

Sword In The Moon

This is a South Korean martial arts flick that looks awesome, but doesn't have any Rotten Tomatoes reviews. The Netflix reception has been decent at 2.9 stars, though.

Black Death

I'm looking forward to this - it looks like "Season of the Witch", except good.

Hobo with a Shotgun

Here is another movie that might be so-bad-it's-good, and is certainly generating a lot of buzz.

The Troll Hunter

This movie looks like it will be terrible, but so many people are excited about it I feel like I have to post it. It uses the "found footage" style of "The Blair Witch" with what appears to be made-for-Syfy level CGI. I would be happy to be wrong about it, though.

Skyline

This movie hasn't gotten very good reviews - actually they've been terrible. However, I'm hoping that watching this movie with the knowledge that the plot is likely bad and the acting/directing is questionable will allow me to overlook these things and bask in the special effects.
Rotten Tomatoes: 17% Fresh

Update: The storyline is a little trying, but I thought the aliens were unique (despite the outward similarities one class has to The Matrix' Sentinels) and the ending was interesting.
My opinion: 5/10

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon

Micheal Bay swears this one is better than the last one...

The Devil's Backbone

This is a Spanish horror movie directed by Guillermo del Toro. I loved it, and almost everybody else who has seen it does too.

Rotten Tomatoes: 91% Fresh
Netflix: 3.7 stars
My opinion: 9 out of 10

Eden Log

Another French Science Fiction offering. This was a fun ride - a bit confusing at times, but it came together at the end. Lots of action.
Rotten Tomatoes: 43% Fresh
Netflix: 2.7 stars
My opinion: 7 out of 10

Priest

Coming on May 13th...

Timecrimes

This is a Spanish SciFi flick. I really enjoyed this movie, but you have to be a little patient with it through the first half. Don't watch any of the other trailers for this movie before watching the movie, though - for reasons I don't understand they give away some pretty key plot points in the alternate trailer.
Rotten Tomatoes: 88% Fresh
Netflix: 3.2 Stars
My opinion: 6 out of 10

Warriors of Heaven and Earth

This is a Chinese martial arts movie that I really enjoyed.
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 68% Fresh
Netflix: 3.5 Stars
My opinion: 7 out of 10

X- Men: First Class

A new UK trailer...

Chrysalis

13 Assassins

Rotten Tomatoes: Liked by 96% of the critics, 89% of the masses
Nextflix: 3.8 stars
My Opinion: 9 out of 10

Super 8

From Steven Spielberg and JJ Abrams...

The Horde

I haven't seen it yet, but it looks like one kick-ass French zombie movie.

Let The Right One In

There is an American redo of this film, but the original is widely regarded as being the better film, provided that you don't mind the subtitles.

The Restless

This trailer doesn't have english subtitles, but the DVD does have them (according to Netflix) and this looks awesome anyways.

Monsters

This is a phenomenal movie. Others have called it a "Cloverfield" knock-off, but that is completely off. "Cloverfield" was a fun monster movie, but "Monsters" is a much deeper, powerful story. This is the kind of movie that even your SciFi ambivalent friends will get into.

Dylan Dog : Dead of Night

Moon

This is a great science fiction movie from the same director as "Source Code". I think it is apparent from the trailer, but in case it isn't this is more of a cerebral movie, so don't watch this if you're in the mood to watch some shit get blown up.

I Saw The Devil

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Thirst

This movie is one dark, twisted road to travel, even for a vampire flick.

The Thing (2011)

This is a Prequel to the 1982 "The Thing", but with the same title, just to be confusing.

IP Man

This is a really good movie. Like other Chinese epics, it has powerful cinematography, but not the beautiful landscapes that I was accustomed to.  To the best of my knowledge, this is the first I've seen of Donnie Yen, and I'm pretty impressed and looking forward to his other movies.
