Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame

Category: Martial Arts
Subcategories: Chinese, Andy Lau, Sherlock-Holmesiness, General Awesometude

Shark Night 3D

Category: Horror
Subcategories: College Kids, Bikinis, Evil Sharks, Evil Shark Wranglers

This movie has been referred to as "Jaws" in a lake, but the trailer hints that there is evil plotting behind this, which pushes this over into the horror genre, in my opinion.

Don't be Afraid of the Dark

Category: Horror
Subcategories: Guillermo del Toro, Haunted House, Movies to be Avoided by Schizophrenics

X-Men: First Class

Category: Superheros
Subcategories: Comic Book, Sebastian Shaw, Kevin Bacon, Hellfire Club, The Origin of Magneto's Party Hat

Here is a series of clips in which the future X-Men are introduced to Sebastian Shaw and the Hellfire Club. I finally understand the scene I kept seeing in the trailers where "Magneto" blows up a room by stomping on the floor.

Melancholia

Category: Science Fiction
Subcategory: Romance? End of the World, What the Hell is becoming of SciFi?

Another entry in the tiny sliver of Venn overlap between SciFi and chicflicks. At least someone here recognizes that finding another planet in our orbit isn't going to turn out well...

Cowboys & Aliens

Category: SciFi
Subcategories: Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, Jon Favreau, Cowboys, Aliens, My Future Wife

New TV Spot

Take Shelter

Category: Urban Fantasy?
Subcategories: Hallucinations, Storms

This feels like "Field of Dreams" meets "Donnie Darko" to me, and it generated a lot of excitement at Sundance...

Imprint

Category: Horror
Subcategories: Masters of Horror, Gory, Evil Geisha, Things You Can't Un-see

This is a 60 minute film/episode from the Masters of Horror series, and considered to have some of the most disturbing imagery of any horror film. Just the trailer is disturbing enough...

I haven't posted all the TV spots, since many are just showing the same footage in a slightly different sequence. However, this one shows us some interesting new elements of the plot.

Sadly, I'm not in one of the cities chosen for the American release of this movie next Friday (May 27th).

The Assassin's Blade

Phase 7

Subcategories: Argentinian, Comedy, Virus, Awesome 'Stache

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Another Earth

Category: SciFi
Subcategories: Romance?, Coldplay?, The Bastard Offspring of the Unholy Union between a SciFi movie and a ChicFlick

This is another movie that is flirting with the edges of SciFi. Maybe it's just the Coldplay in the trailer that's throwing me off. And the fact that we supposedly have another planet sitting on our doorstep in a stable orbit around the sun without tidal disasters, planetary upheaval and neither one getting beaned by the other's moon. I'll try to keep an open mind, I promise.

Død snø (Dead Snow)

Category: Horror, Comedy
Subcategories: Norwegian, Zombies, Nazis, Weaponized Ikea furniture

I don't like this movie because it challenges my long standing zombie apocalypse plan of moving someplace cold, based on the assumption that  the zombies would freeze. That said, this looks like a fun ride.
Rotten Tomatoes: 67% fresh (58% by the masses)
Netflix: 3.4 stars

Shaolin 2010

Category: Martial Arts
Subcategories: Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, Remake, Epic Ass-Kickery

Subcategories: Independent, Found Footage, Ghost Hunting, Pants Soiling

Supposedly coming out in one form or another at the end of August.

The Big Bang

Category: SciFi
Subcategories: Detectives, Physicists, Strippers, Snoop Dog, The God Particle

I'm not convinced this is a SciFi movie yet, but since is has Snoop Dog as a porn director, I'll include it. Of course, if they wanted to make a bold choice, they would have cast Snoop as the particle physicist. This isn't getting great reviews, but if you're interested the DVD is being released next week.
Rotten Tomatoes: 8% fresh, liked by 29% of the masses

The Adventures of Tintin

Category: Fantasy?
Subcategories: Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Child Detectives, Even More 3D Crammed Down Your Throat

Rotten Tomatoes: 13% fresh (81% of the masses)

Fright Night

Category: Horror
Subcategories: Vampires, Remake,  McLovin

There may be a commercial in front of this - be patient.

Coming out in the UK soon - I'm not sure when we'll be seeing it in the US.

Here's a new TV commercial:

Dark City

Category: Urban Fantasy

My opinion: 8/10

Avalon

Category: SciFi
Subcategories: Polish, Cyberpunk, Old-School 'Puters

Subcategories: Vampires, Post-apocalyptic

This appears to be like Zombieland, except with vampires instead of zombies and no Bill Murray...

On one hand, it's frikin' "Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots: The Movie", one the other hand, Hugh Jackman doesn't sign up for crappy movies...

Intruders

An upcoming Clive Owen horror movie.

The Host

This is a Korean monster movie that seems to have a very avid following.
Rotten Tomatoes: 92% fresh
Netflix: 3.3 stars

Immortal (2004)

This seems to be a 'love it or hate it' movie, and many are of the opinion that fans of Japanese anime will better appreciate this movie. I thought that the cinematography and world-building were interesting, but that the plot wandered. Still, I didn't regret spending an hour and a half watching this film.
Rotten Tomatoes: 43% fresh
Netflix: 3 stars
My opinion: 5/10

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Two new TV Commercials

Green Lantern

Two new TV commercials:

I'm Not Jesus Mommy

Intact (Intacto)

A Spanish SciFi offering from 2001.
Rotten Tomatoes: 72% Fresh
Netflix: 3.2 stars

Conan The Barbarian

Yet another redo, but I think this one will be good. Then again, I never really was a fan of the original series.

Shiver (Eskalofrio)

A Spanish Horror movie that seems to be getting decent reviews on Netflix (3.3 stars), but with no rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

One Point O (Paranoia 1.0)

Looks like a trippy ride...

Netflix: 2.7 stars
